Case 2: Twilight’s case notes

Hello, everypony! It’s been a while. A, uh, long while.

As development on case 2 got underway, we kind of fell out of the habit of posting here, until not posting became its own habit. We’re sorry about that. A lot of you have asked whether this project is still ongoing. The answer is most assuredly yes! We haven’t been saying anything, but we’ve still been working on the second case at a steady, if slow, pace. With this post, we’re hoping to break that cycle and start posting again more often. So, without further ado, have some preliminary info about case 2 after the break. More to come later.

From the desk of Twilight Sparkle

The accused: Trixie

The crime: Arson

The victim: Sapphire Shores and Carneighie Hall

The (other) investigator: Philo Reed

Spike, take a note.
*sigh* Twilight, are you still on this kick? No one else is ever going to read these.
Come on, Spike, we’re investigators now, and investigators take notes. You never know when you’ll need them!
Fiiiine. Okay, pen and ink at the ready.
Ahem! It was a dark and stormy night…
It was a completely ordinary day.
SPIKE! Where’s your sense of adventure and mystery? A good read never starts with something like that!
I thought we were taking investigative notes and stuff. Y’know… non-fiction?
Well… you still have readers. And readers ought to be entertained. ANYWAY! Back to the report.
Went to Manehattan with friends to see the Equestrian Music Awards ceremony. Was invited by Rarity, who got tickets from Sapphire Shores. Was really looking forward to it.
Do you really have to talk like that, Twilight?
Not including subjects is how you know it’s an investigative report, Spike! …Where was I? Oh, right.
Show started exactly when it was supposed to. Was going great until Sapphire Shores’ section. Then… not so great. Seems Trixie had other plans, or so goes the accusation against her. Lights all went out, then she showed up – or someone posing as her, at least. Fireworks were set off and nearly ended up burning down Carneighie Hall. Fortunately, everyone seems to have gotten out okay.
Would be bad enough with just that, but it seems as though this case is high enough profile that a pony named Philo Reed from the Equestrian Bureau of Investigation has been sent to handle the case. Don’t like him at all. Very self-assured. No confidence that he’ll properly investigate. On the other hoof… have no jurisdiction here. Will need to be resourceful. Somehow.
Don’t think that Trixie did it. She’s annoying and obnoxious, sure, but… this? I don’t see it. But can I prove it? Remains to be seen. Hopefully. For Trixie’s sake, at least…
Do you REALLY think that Trixie didn’t do it, Twilight? I mean, she DID, y’know, enslave all of Ponyville that one time.
I… want to believe, Spike. Believe that a pony can change and become better. Maybe Trixie did do it… but everyone else is probably just going to assume as much. For her sake, she deserves someone to at least give her the benefit of the doubt. Especially when no one else will.
Can’t dawdle too long. Philo Reed already is sure that Trixie is obviously guilty. To make things worse, other things need solving, too. Seems like Applejack’s getting along with the Orange side of her family about as well as the last time, which is making her… distracted, to say the least. I know I’m going to need her help with this. Will have to find some way to help her along the way, too.
I can already tell that this is going to be an… interesting next couple of days.
Well, you know you can always count on your number one assistant!
Thanks, Spike. Let’s get to this.

Manehattan’s an awfully big place, after all…

  1. Nice to hear from you again.
Also, no need to rush, if you sometimes let us know if you are still there, we are fine. : P

  2. Yay! I’ve just finished 1st case and MLI is simply the best fan game I’ve ever played! Keep up the good work! (And, as it was said by Ismalith, no need to rush :D)

  3. Hourra!

Finally here it is. When will we be able to make our case?

Anyway I’m glad your not dead, you guys are awesome

    • I’ve had to spend most of my free time on case 2 stuff lately, but once my part in that is mostly complete, I’ll be getting back to work on the case creator. It’ll probably be released before case 2, as I’m planning on using it to compile case 2 – there’s no test bed quite like practical use.

  5. I imagine Trixie won’t be easy to get an honest testimony out of.

“Trixie was waiting tables at the– I mean she was fighting off a horde of Windigos that were attacking the city! You should all be thanking the Great and Powerful Trixie!”

  7. If that’s is game dialogue between Spike and Twilight then remove “hand”, also please do not include a spoiler filled opening cut scene like in case one.

  8. I’d hate to be “that guy,” but…

“On the other hand… have no jurisdiction here.”

Shouldn’t that be “On the other hoof?”

Either way, I loved this game! Great to see it wasn’t just a one-off thing!

    • Whoops. Good catch, I’ve fixed that. The case 2 script will have better proofreading; this was just a throwaway bit of exposition that I wrote in an evening.

  9. Heey, can you, please please please add the characters animations in the downloads?,
At least a sprite sheet, I would thank it to you soooo much, I just need it!
Amazing work, I’m a fan of Ace Attorney series, this is just genius!
(Still waiting for a murder case)

    • You mean the character animations in case 1? If so, you can find the case file at C:\ProgramData\My Little Investigations\Cases\9912C0C7-2C2F-53CB-856A-F82D11CFBED1.mlicase on Windows or /Library/Application Support/My Little Investigations/Cases/9912C0C7-2C2F-53CB-856A-F82D11CFBED1.mlicase on OS X. If you rename it to .zip, then you can open it and find all of the resources from case 1 available within – it’s just an archive file. All the spritesheets are in there.

We might add that directly to the downloads page if there’s more demand, but we haven’t heard any besides you to date.

  10. Nice to see an update from you guys! And a good one at that…Trixie, Manehattan, the rival investigator, and arson…It’s gonna be a great case.

Will Philo Reed be Twilight’s reoccuring rival, then? And what’s the ETA on that, do you think?

    • “Will Philo Reed be Twilight’s reoccuring rival, then?”

      Yup, that’s the plan.

“And what’s the ETA on that, do you think?”

You mean of case 2? We’re not really late enough in development that I’d really feel comfortable speculating on that yet, unfortunately. All-volunteer projects can have a pretty high variance in terms of how long things take, and I don’t want to get anyone’s hopes up about a certain date before I know that we can deliver.

  11. Nice to see an update, and it’s shaping nicely!

Two questions: Will Philo Reed be reoccuring, or will Twilight’s rival vary between cases? And what’s the ETA, do you think?

  12. I wonder if the criminal is rough diamond, after all she pretended to be Princess Luna in the actual comics, and a police officer and she also from Trixie for robbery of a diamond!
Or maybe it’s Trixie’s evil twin sister, been secretly jealous of Trixie’s magical prowess and the windward loving interest of one twilight sparkle!

  13. Great game, great job has done on it. I am really looking forward to witness and play second part.
    Thank you most sincerely.
    p.s. Greetings from Russia.

  14. Le gasp! I was getting worried you guys were gone for good! Can’t wait for further updates and the day when case 2 finally comes!

  15. Я тоже не могу дождаться, когда наконец выйдет 2я часть!! Разработчики молодцы.

  16. I watched ryoshi play case 1 for the first 3 episodes he did. Then I said to my self “I gotta play this for myself” . So I downloaded it played it and I was very impressed with the voice acting. Almost was perfect with them. Anyway keep up your work on this. Case 2 will be as fun as ever, even if it takes a long time.
