  1. where can you report bugs?
I’m using linux and came to experience that the program accesses files relative to the working directory, not relative to the game directory, so you have to launch it while in the game directory. otherwise it wont work.

  2. Played it. Loved it. Can’t wait for the final product! But when you present evidence to somepony, the little yellow bracket doesn’t move. At all.

    • Sound like the destination of java has changed. Try “open with…” and then look vor the new desination of your java.exe

  3. The game is done really well its just that I can’t really combine any evidence and Applebloom’s voice has mysteriously turned off

  4. well, this is hard, dang rarity, WHAT DO I NEED TO PRESENT TO YOU. ugh, anypony wanna help?
i rock at phoenix wright, why don’t you love me mli?…

    • I’m having a hard time with Rarity’s interrogation too. It’s frustrating to know the answers and have the case pretty much figured out but to be unable to go on because you can’t find what, exactly, you need to present her. It should be evident in the dialogue…

  5. When I finished the demo I was like “that was it?” but I loved it, even the voice actors did a great job but I did see one of them say “Someone” when the Diloge said “Somepony” please take note that I heard clicking sounds near the end of some sentences. Graphics were good too, at first when I saw the engine demos I thought they were going to be actual sprites. I saw no bugs at all during my first playthrough, really great! I hope the next Demo comes out soon, good luck!

  6. Finished the demo, loved it. Very fun, polished, and interesting; great graphics and great voice-acting.
For the final game, I suggest you add more “hotspots” to the scenery to trigger interesting monologue. Even if they’re irrelevant to the case, they add more vitality and interactivity to the game. Extra characters, maybe walking around, would also be a nice touch.

P.D. In about two dialog pieces there’s missing audio, only problem I’ve found within the demo.

    • The missing audio was mentioned in the readme.txt and it is understandable that some parts did not have such a high priority yet. Like if you presented Twilight herself as evidence to Apple Bloom, you get that alot.

  7. So I’ve dowloaded the demo and un-zipped it and everything…and only discovered afterwards that I hadn’t downloaded Java yet…so I went and did that…so now it SHOULD work…but it doesn’t…it won’t even open. I see a window opening for, like, a tenth of a second, and then said window dissapears again…
*…notices a couple of people mentioning the “cannot find data file” error that he encountered before installing java, and the solution involving “open with”…* Hmmm…maybe I should try that…

    • Nope. Didn’t work, still getting a window appearing for 1/10th of a second and then dissapearing again…

  8. the data problem when i click the lanch_mli ,says data folder not found , i didnt move any folders ,the data folders there at the top of the other 2 lanchs and readme ,need help

    • I can’t even access the evidence. Anytime I click on the menu the game closes whether it’s to present it or view it.

    • It’s like the evidence window is invisible … if I click where it’s supposed to be I can hear the sounds it makes from selecting a piece of evidence, I just can’t see it at all πŸ™

Only thing I was able to accomplish is combining the hair and the tire marks since they’re the first 2 things in evidence so I could just click “Combine” because they were already selected.

  9. > Seen hints of the case for months
    > Has been speculating for months
    > Explanation of what happened spoiled immediately in prologue >_>

Haha, but it was still such an amazing demo~ I didn’t expect all of it to be voice-acted, especially in such a well-done way. The music and graphics are fantastic, too. I can’t wait until it’s finished. πŸ˜€

    • Spoiled huh? Like I said before, just because you MAY know the culprits of the crime doesn’t make the case any less interesting. πŸ˜‰

There are still many things to be explained and potential surprises for the player.

Anyway, thank you ALL for the feedback. I’m very glad to see that most of you enjoyed the demo! We will definitely be working hard this summer to clean the game up and implement more content.

      Stay tuned everyone!

  10. So far it misses some bind on the keyboard. I mean use space/enter/esc to skip/moving through dialogue or exit the evidence window and so on.
Also “press for info” is in infinite loop ! Perhaps it would be best to put some sort of a log or a journal to read the dialogue again, or something to write some notes in it.
Tis all I have in mind for now !

P.s Freecolt, I see what you did there !

  11. I have a problem. So, I downloaded it, and I accidentally ran it on some other program then Java, and now I cannot fix it. Somebody please help me, I would really like to play this game!

  12. That’s a great work! I’ve loved this demo! I’m really waiting for the whole game now…
And for those who say “The demo is way too short”, are you sure you have finished it?? After a short time of playing, I thought the same, but I was missing a lot of things because I had forgotten an important element of gameplay!
So be sure u’ve gone to the end of the demo before commenting on how this is short… (And think, 51 MB that’s not so small).

  13. I tried playing it but the bottom bar kept flashing the characters never came up when you talked and the background is black. It seems no one else is having this issue. I use Windows 7 and I just formatted…

  14. After the sprites finish loading, it just stays on that load screen, but I can hear what I assume is the opening movie. I read in the readme that this is a known issue. Is there any way around it? Am I not going to be able to play the final game either?

  15. Is it only me or combinating doesn’t work? I tried to combine “White hair” and “Opal” and ………. muffin(nothing).
Tell me! Is it only me?

    • Now I c comment right above me xD
So… ok. It’s only me. Do you know how can i fix that? Like…… ya know. New Java or something not-comlicated.
      PLZ HELP MEEEH

  16. Well, so far it’s a bust for me. I load the game, it goes through the intro, then when Twilight comes in and asks Rarity what happened, nothing else happens. I’ve tried clicking the mouse and pressing all the keys on my keyboard, but Twilight and Rarity just stand there looking at each other. I’m using Windows XP MCE on a Dell Inspiron E1505 with 2GB RAM. I have Java 6 update 26 and Java 7 update 4 installed on my computer.

Also, it crashes on startup under Ubuntu 12.04.

  17. I love the game but i have to ask are you gonna add sound clips like “hold it” during interigations? Either way im gonna love the game but as a veteran of the AA series i find it a little underwelming to not have twi scream something along the likes of “Of Course!” or “Ah HA!” when she combines evidence. Same for lack of “Take That”s during an encounter… but other then that great demo i look forword to the full thing

  18. I got stuck on the Rarity interrogation thing…then I remembered one of the most important features in the game. Finally got past it, then the demo ended.
Don’t suppose there’s a longer demo any time soon is there? xD

  19. The only problem that I had with this game, is that they gave out the culprit too much easily…I liked it more when the culprit wasn’t shown too directly, and you had a little bit of doubt around your own defense…

But, it’s a great game whatsoever…so, THANK YOU FOR THIS!! πŸ˜€

    • Don’t forget that it’s only the first case. Remember the AA games? The first case was much like a tutorial for the other cases. The culprit was almost always revealed.

  20. I can’t open the evidence tab without making the game crash ! Other than that, it looked really well done. I love the graphics and the voice acting !

  21. PS: Did Twilight’s voice actor changed between the beginning and the middle of the game? I just want to know. Because in the beginning she had a little bit more little petit girl voice, and then suddenly, she changed into a deep voiced and stravagant woman…

I’m just asking to know :D.

    • Hello ^_^ I actually just made a post about that. Apparently some technical issues with the recording (since my computer recorded it at the wrong bitrate)So it caused my voice to go super low all the sudden when played back at the proper speed in the game. Though this issue will definitely be fixed it’s pretty simple to fix. Sorry for that, I was surprised myself when I heard it, I thought (I can’t even sound like that if I even wanted to)
      Thank you for playing! XD

    • Yep, played it a second time, and it did only get only to the same scene. It was great, and I can’t wait to see how this comes out when the first chapter is ended…

PS: If you need some ideas around the scripts of knew cases (not that you would need help around it, since you made a great first chapter…), I’ll love to help :D.

  22. Drat. I have the dreaded, load screen still present, but I can still here everything fine, glitch. -.- Curse you lappy!

  23. PLEASE TELL US! I’ve tried everything! And I really want to play this. Been waiting to long to give up now!

  24. Don’t see the text bar at all, only some parts of the sprites appear, I can actually get to the part where I can controll her, but she only flickers in the black background. Yea, she can actually interact with stuff I can’t see, but, black background. So yea, guess no demo for me.

  25. I love the demo but on my laptop with windows 7, it gets up to 57. freezes, then loads up to 68 and when it freezes, the next screen after the talk with rarity and the mayor, will be mostly black and can’t see apple bloom’s cutie mark crusader’s cape. It works fine on my pc with xp, no freezes or anything. I am so glad to be able to play the demo. can’t wait to play more

  26. Great GREAT game! I wish that Fighting is Magic released demos as well… *sigh*

Hope to see more demos coming from you, or even, heck, the full game πŸ˜€

A few bugs: sometimes the text doesn’t match the voice actress’ voice. Also, I remember a little intonation error, but that’s understandable.

  27. looking forward to the full game… even if i cant figure out how to finish the demo… i hate that i know im missing something obvious but cant figure it out.

  28. Reporting in Bugs;

Im using Windows Vista on a 32bit system and when I run the demo, everything works but it don’t get a tab/box for my evidence.

The only reason I know it exists is because I can’t progress any further as I can’t select the right type of evidence and searching up on Youtube revealed what I was missing in game

I downloaded off the direct link and as I said before im using a 32 bit system, has anyone had this issue?

  29. Hey, I tried out the demo, and I think it’s shaping up really nicely. The art is very sharp and the voice acting, while not spot-on, gets the job done. What’s here so far is pretty polished, but there’s about two issues I think you should clear up with players:

    1. When interrogating Apple Bloom the first time, I only had the loose scrap of the CMC cape, before presenting it to Rarity. Showing this displayed the default “not evidence” speech. But after collecting the updated piece of the CMC cape evidence that Rarity provides, I tried showing that, and was denied again. It took a moment, but I realized you have to show her the scrap again, before it leads to the line of questioning where the next piece of evidence becomes important.

I find it rather illogical and misleading that the scrap only leads to the next line of questioning until you have the next piece of evidence. I think you should either touch it up so it still goes to the next part despite not having Rarity’s additional evidence with Twilight pointing out “I might not have enough”, or some other indicator that you need some more evidence to really continue an interrogation. Which leads me to the next point.

    2. Getting stuck on the interrogation with Rarity. I’m sure you might have received some people getting stuck here, where you have to combine the trail with the hair, AND the hair with Opal right after that, for Twilight herself to come to the conclusion that it’s Opal. I realize this is a general problem the Ace Attorney series itself has, where the player catches onto things faster than the main characters because while I knew that the cat hair was relevant, I didn’t know why it wasn’t be accepted.

It would have helped here to have Twilight point out again that you need to combine evidence to really “understand” the details about them. That, or some indicator that the evidence isn’t fully understood by Twilight herself, like a little question mark icon next to it.

These are pretty small issues, but after seeing a few others already get frustrated, I think it’s something that you should look into right now, especially considering when things get more complicated in later cases.

Aside from that, the writing is really solid, and true to the characters and show, which is a relief from many other fan-related works that miss all of that. Presenting “twilight” as evidence to Apple Bloom was really cute and actually made me laugh, so you did a really good job with that!

  30. You guys made my day with this. PONIES AND WRIGHT/EDGEWORTH GAMES ARE TWO OF MY FAVORITE THINGS. And now they are one. I about died from happiness.
The demo was awesome, the humor was excellent, and I have a feeling the end product will be so epic I won’t be able to contain the awesome. Keep it up guys!

  31. Well, I must say the engine is great and the animation is awesome! The voices are a bit meh at some point. Although Rarity’s voice fits almost perfectly, Twilight’s voice sounds a bit too… snobby. Could be the last-minute recordings, because I thought it sounded more like her at the start of the demo.

The demo was a tad bit short, but oh well, one doesn’t look a gifted horse- err, pony in the mouth, eh?

  32. Absolutely loved the Demo, can’t wait for more. I’d ask when the full thing planned on being released, but I don’t want to sound like I’m rushing you guys, so I won’t ask and just say I look forward to it. If it’s as fun as the demo was, it’ll be the best game of the year. Can’t wait!

  33. There is a LOT to like about how this game is shaping up, and I’m impressed by the overall quality of it so far. Great job so far, and keep up the good work.

Here is a random assortment of feedback positive and negative. Although this demo is the beginning of something undeniably great, there were some moments that could have been a lot better. I don’t mean to be mean or hurtful, just trying to bring to your attention any possible areas of weakness that you mightn’t be aware of, or anything like that, so you can make the game the best it can be.

The soundtrack is particularly good, I really thought it was of high quality. I caught the U.N. Owen Was Her reference in the BGM in the last scene of the demo, good stuff. It wouldn’t hurt to make some of the loops a bit longer though.

The opening menu was a bit dull, especially in how it’s animated. I know it’s a demo and I doubt it’ll stay that way for the final release, but the no thrills colour change on mouseover thing definitely reminds me of a person’s first flash game or something. I know you guys are almost definitely aware of that, but I wnated to mention it anyway.

    On voice acting:

Applebloom was very good, much better than I was expecting from the youtube vid. A better mic may improve things, possibly maybe potentially.

Diamond Dogs also top notch, no criticism, except maybe put some of the phrases closer together in that into bit. There’s a slightly-more-than-there-should-be gap between groups of words in that bit.

Twilight was also very good, but the voice is often a tad lower than the Tara Strong’s version, I have no idea if that’s something that can be easily fixed or anything for future lines, in any case it’s not that noticable (because there’s always variance in pitch from line to line anyway) and not a big deal. What definitely SHOULD be looked out for are the lines delivered without any Twilight-esque speech embellishments. Some lines were definitely delivered with emphasis on particular words and sentence flow like Strong does, and it’s superb. However, some lines are delivered without, and it’s noticable. It’s a bit mean to pick on Twi, since she has the most lines, but there are definitely some lines delivered better than others. Great Job in any case, it really wouldn’t be bad if the current quality of voice acting for Twi continued, it’s still really really good. Just a few points where it might be possible to improve.

Rarity… isn’t voiced particularly well. But Rarity is just really damn hard to voice well, for sure. We know Rarity is a bit of a drama queen and in the show she really goes the full range emotionally, and Tabitha St. Germain really goes everywhere and does everything with Rarity’s voice accordingly, and I can imagine that would be ridiculously hard to capture, and I think MLI’s Rarity makes a good attempt, but misses out on a wide part of that range. It’s at the level that if I didn’t know that it is supposed to be Rarity, I wouldn’t be able to guess correctly whose voice it’s supposed to be. Trademark Rarity lines and Rarity-esque dialogue in the writing help of course, but it’s a little bit worrying. The slight lisp is also offputting, but I don’t know what you could do about that. Also, get rid of the clicking at the end of lines. Touch up the soundfiles so that they’re not there, or re-record the lines? I’m not sure, but sometimes it’s forgotten. My main suggestion is just continue to study and practice and enjoy the whole process, there is potential in the VA and I really wish her luck in continuing to voice Rarity from here onwards.

Gameplay is alright. Possibly a few issues of the what to do when variety, as normal from a point and click style game, but I think you did fine with it really.

Someone said in the other comments to put in “HOLD IT” or “A-HA” or “TAKE THAT” or whatever sound effects and speech bubbles on the screen whenever Twi does something like present evidence or interupt. This would be REALLY awesome if some kind of variant could be put into the game, if anything gets taken away from the various feedback you’ll be getting from everyone, this would be the one I want the most. It would be GREAT.

Only have three areas to go is small, and I wasted some time working out that some stuff clearly just plain wasn’t in the demo. Maybe signpost these in future demos or something?

If I can think of some more stuff, I’ll come back later. Good job producing this demo, it really makes me happy to see this coming on, and the quality is great. Anyone involved in the making of this should be proud of what they’ve done so far. Good luck with the rest of the game; I’ll be looking forward to it.

  34. Hey, played the demo, here are my thoughts, good and bad:

*.) Good voice work, especially Twilight’s, although it sounded like there were two different “batches” of recordings for Twilight, and a lot of Apple Bloom’s lines were unrecorded. Diamond Dogs sounded similar to the show, but still a bit cheesy and over-the-top (I guess they were pretty ridiculous in the actual episode). The excellent voice acting was one of the most noticeable qualities of the game.

*.) I really dislike the opening cutscene. It gave away too much too quickly, and the interrogation with Rarity (at the end of the demo) would have been a lot more dramatic without knowing what I am working toward. In contrast, the cutscene with the CMC was awesome, dramatic, and fit with the background music very well, along with the voice of Apple Bloom. The part of the opening scene with Scootaloo could have fit better during Rarity’s interrogation, and the very first part could play when Twilight starts to develop a credible idea of who the actual perpetrator is. I hope there are more dramatic cutscenes (but not overdone) at critical parts of the full game. Stylistic differences between different characters’ (like Pinkie’s felt thoughts, I imagine Rainbow would have actiony/anime style thoughts, etc…) speculations or between different cases (an inevitability if you have multiple artists) could be cool.

*.) I like all the “filler” (non-directly-related stuff) and I hope there is a lot more in the full game, as it really adds flavor and creates immersion. My favorite was Twilight’s lengthy conversation with an increasingly-disinterested Apple Bloom about herself and her history, along with trying to find a date for the spa with Rarity. The references to the previous investigation team (everyone dreads them actually arriving) is great. I hope there is a lot more of this, all of which could serve as red herrings or something extra (ie. showing certain unimportant evidence creates useless revelations and eventually leads to some kind of dramatic moment, hidden conversation, easter egg, etc… like Pinkie’s snack-cake interrogation). I’d also like to see some different characters, maybe with just a few lines or something (nothing too hard), because Ponyville seems really empty with just three ponies across three screens. Maybe the filler characters could be useful for something.

*.) It may just be me and the order I did everything (although the game should respond to player choices), but when I talked to Apple Bloom the first time, Twilight mentions not hearing anything about Scootaloo and asking about her, even though Rarity never brought up the CMC. I thought it was strange that Twilight thinks something like ‘There is one crusader who I haven’t heard about’ when neither Sweetie Belle nor Apple Bloom have been brought up. Further, I thought it was strange that Apple Bloom was evidence on the Evidence Menu before anypony indicates or refers to her. This error really broke continuity for me, with Twilight going from Rarity directly into being suspicious of Scootaloo (without a reference to the scooter either).

*.) The main loop got a little tiring by the end of the demo. I hope you don’t keep it the same through the full case (or god forbid, multiple cases). Although the BGM was on the whole fitting and good, especially the dramatic fadeouts when the interrogations start and the actual interrogation music.

*.) The Pinkie thoughts explaining gameplay was really clever and well-done.

*.) The Twilight walking animation is smooth and responsive.

*.) Finally, the sync between the voice acting and the text scroll was great and really showed a lot of effort.

On the whole, I can’t wait for the full game, and good luck with further production. It is really good.

    • Thank you for the compliment about Twi ^^ actually there was a problem with the audio, so it caused my voice to get distorted basically in the last scene, when it suddenly drops very low in pitch. Something to do with the bitrate and recording it slightly off the needed bitrate. Im not that good with technical things, but it won’t be like that again. And im really glad you enjoyed the demo ^_^ I hope we exceed your expectations as we continue!

  35. Pingback: My Little Investigations Demo Overview | The Round Stable

  36. Cool demo. It kind of disappears after you finish it, which freaked me out a little, but other than that it worked fine. Keep up the great work, can’t wait for the full version.

  37. the partner tab isn’t shown for me??!! what the hell is happening, and is it normal to start with 4 evidences(names of ponies)

    • It’s just a demo, for the demo, you don’t need partners and everyone had the 4 ponies as evidence. Don’t worry, your pc isn’t glitching in Ponyville.

  38. Ooo sweet Selestia and Luna -YES!!! Great job you are doing, folks! By the way-I’m Russian and writing from Russia. Just for you to know how far your popularity extends))) I don’t have any problems with downloading the demo with torrents. After it was done I’ve just extracted the game from the archive to my desctop. I appreciate very much the graphics, the voices, the plot… *with filly Fluttershys voce* Yes, I love everythiiiiiiing!!! Just wanted to inspire you to keep doing your good work! Can’t wait until the game would be realised

  39. I found this Demo to be quiet good. Playing through the voices though I found a few errors.

After presenting Rairity with Scootaloo as evidence, Twilight’s voice deepens to the point where she doesn’t sound anything like the character. I’m going to go on a whim and assume this was one of the first things recorded. A re-recording would fix that easily.

Rairity made a few mistakes herself, sometimes drifting from her light British accent into a French one. Easy to fix.

    Applebloom was perfect!

I know I’m supposed to leave criticism on the Forums, but it won’t let me register there.

    A great playthrough.

  40. I couldn’t get the game to start. Unzipped it, started “Launch_MLI.jar” and then… nothing. Not even a loading screen.
I have Win7, and yes, Java is installed.

  41. help i’m stuck in the interrogation with applebloom. i have the tire tracks, opal’s hair, a star-shaped object, twilight, rarity, applebloom, scootaloo, the mayor and opal.

  42. now i completed the interrogation, but what evidence will remove the lock on RARITY’S last night?

  43. Just wanted to chime and say what an amazing job you guys have done on this game so far. The graphics, the animation, voice acting and writing, all SUPERB from what I’m seeing here in this demo so far.

I am greatly looking forward to future releases. πŸ™‚

  44. for some reason when i try to run the game java says it cant find the data folder and is above it. what do i do?

  45. sigh… i got onto it and didnt work was stuck on the title but then read “Some computers with integrated graphics won’t be able to play the game β€” they’ll get stuck on the Loading screen forever.”

  46. you are my HEROES!!! i just recently started watching the show(and finished every episode in one go) and i just reached beginner brony status(my personal scale of bronydom) by downloading everything FIM related for minecraft and now i find this! i can’t wait for the full release!! now i just need to find a way of hiding my brony ways from my family……….

  47. The beautiful game – the quality is much higher than I expected
I liked the voices of the characters and funny dialogues
and smooth animations and other stuff

    more more MOAR! (\ ^_^ /)

  48. i downloaded the release and i was version 1.1.0 and it asked me for updates and i clicked yes after it loaded it told me update complete and it opened the game and it was still on version 1.1.0 i wanted to update it to 1.1.3 also where do i go to download the latest version
