General MLI Discussion / Re: A thought came to me durring Pinkie's explination
« on: December 16, 2012, 07:56:54 PM »RANDOM THOUGHT!!! Someone needs to make a game where you play as the bad guy instead of the good guys, and this time the bad guy wins
Destroy All Humans says hi.

I've had similar thoughts before, but I usually settle on the idea that the character is an extension of myself as I play. We tend to identify with characters we play as, saying things like "I solved the puzzle" instead of "Link solved the puzzle". It's an interesting aspect of sentience. Then again, I guess you would say the same thing if you were a puppetmaster...

« on: December 15, 2012, 02:35:40 PM »You can't "approximate" vsync. You either do it or you don't.
Something else about the icon, I'd like to opt-in for icons on my desktop. Thanks, but no thanks, I have enough clutter as it is.
Semantics, I intended to say that the manager should be matching vsync. I think there was a hardware command for enforcing it that we overlooked earlier because it seemed to be working as it was, though -- I'll revisit this at some point before the full release and see if there's a more reliable way than the current means. I only see the tearing on two of my six test systems, so I assumed until recently that it was just slower hardware missing the target framerate.
Yes, I agree about the desktop shortcut option. This installer was produced in a day, so it's missing a bit of polish; I'll try to add that and a few other options (starting the game and/or reading the readme right after installation, for example) in time for case 1.

Tests confirmed that the OS X bug is gone. The fixed OS X version of the game will be on the site as soon as Gabu gets my confirmation message.

« on: December 14, 2012, 10:34:08 PM »One, I experienced some screen tearing while walking around. It seemed to me like a v-sync issue, because the location of the tearing moved around like on an old CRT TV. The tearing itself was more pronounced while running (I first noticed it while sprinting around the Carousel Boutique area), but once seen it cannot be unseen. I tried to take a video capture of it, but in the capture the tearing looks more like artifacts in the video and are hard to spot unless you have already seen them in game.
Two, the section in the Windows Volume Mixer for controlling the volume and/or muting the game is covered with a weird overlay that looks like the left side of the game icon in oversized mode.
Darn it, I was hoping nopony would notice that volume mixer thing.

The tearing is weird -- the game's FPS manager should be approximating vsync, but on some computers, this happens anyway. Do you happen to know the refresh rate of your monitor/TV? Wondering if it maybe has something to do with a higher/lower refresh rate.
The volume mixer icon is unsolvable for now. SDL (currently, anyway) only supports one size of icon. We picked the highest-resolution icon we could (256x256) because this is used various places in Aero, and on high-density monitors, but Microsoft appears to have forgotten to scale icons in the volume mixer, hence the gigantic monstrosity you see before you. The only solution to this would be to use a less-detailed icon /everywhere/. So blame Microsoft for this one!

Update: A fix for the OS X issue is being tested. It will launch as soon as I receive confirmation that the bug has indeed been fixed.

« on: December 14, 2012, 05:24:38 PM »Also, as an extension of the known moonwalking bug, it is also possible to make Twi walk or run in place, by holding the cursor directly under her, and keeping the mouse button pressed.
Oh, trust me, *I* know all about this, but Gabu keeps sweeping this under the rug so it never gets fixed... >_>

*giggle* We'll fix it eventually, it's just nowhere near as important as some of the crashbugs and platform issues we've had to deal with.

To those of you with the Mac framework crash: I know exactly what's causing this, and it will be patched today or tomorrow. My bad entirely on that one.
Just disable your antivirus until the download and installation is done, then turn it back on. Viruses generally can't get to your computer unless you go to an infected site or open an infected email (very few exceptions to this, but they're much rarer), so it won't be that dangerous, if that's what you're worried about.
Its installing that is a problem with me. My Virus Protection won't allow me to even keep the EXE program.

« on: December 14, 2012, 02:28:15 PM »Actually, installation went just fine; it was opening it that was the problem. I have 10.6.5, so it's impossible for my OS to be outdated. Here's the error message I got:
Dyld Error Message:
Library not loaded: @rpath/SDL.framework/Versions/A/SDL
Referenced from: /Volumes/My Little Investigations Demo 2/MyLittleInvestigationsDemo2.app/Contents/MacOS/../Frameworks/SDL_image.framework/Versions/A/SDL_image
Reason: image not found
I really want to use it.
Oh, jeez, this one... I thought I had every instance of this bug fixed, but apparently I missed a spot. I know how to solve this, at least. Will probably have this patched today or tomorrow, sorry about that!

« on: December 14, 2012, 01:28:44 PM »It's not opening on my Mac Os X. I re-downloaded it several times, and it didn't work once.
We could use more information. What version of OS X is this? Is it 32- or 64-bit? The game only supports 10.5 (Leopard) and newer; if it's older than that, there are several reasons we can't compile the game for that version.

Hey, everypony!
If you're having trouble getting the game to work (installing, crashes, etc.), here's the best place to post about it. We tried our best to improve compatibility this time around, but in the event that it still isn't perfect (as software seldom tends to be), this should hopefully allow us to keep track and figure out where the remaining problems are.

« on: December 14, 2012, 01:10:54 PM »*starts torrent, and in the meanwhile looks for .deb package specification and how to extract files from it the way it will work without apt-get, because Gabu can't see Ubuntu isn't the only Linux out there*
And yes, it would be a much lesser problem if you have decided to open source - building from scratch is so much easier than hacking packages.x2
This is exactly why we said in the install guide to try Wine and the Windows version on Linux if you aren't using a Debian-based distro -- the dependencies were tricky even on the intended platform, and because it's SDL and OpenGL, it runs just as well via Wine in almost all cases. Have you tried that out?

« on: December 14, 2012, 08:43:36 AM »Pinkie Pie is a liar, she told me that I didn't have the evidence needed for Rarity's locked topic. Yet I did have Scootaloo's profile. She isn't a very good wall breaker if she can't peek at game state at will.
Also, why is she talking about a walkthru instead of a manual? The first has obvious problems with knowing too much. And Walkthrus usually don't include the manual part. Besides, what better way to break the fourth wall than for her to refer to something that really does exist, but outside of the game world?
The thing about her saying you don't have the evidence you need is a known problem, I think we did mention that in the known issues. We'll fix that, don't worry.
She's talking about a walkthrough, and yeah, that means that she knows everything that's going to happen, at least in case 1. She's not too keen to spoil it, though, so that's not a problem. (I'm not sure what Gabu was planning, but I think I have mentioned that we should write an official walkthrough at some point that lines up with what Pinkie is citing.)

General MLI Discussion / Re: The plans for MLI if case of Hasbro ordering shutdown of the project
« on: December 14, 2012, 07:34:43 AM »
For those of you who are worried about this: Don't be, at least not until we have more of a reason to be worried.
They clearly had "MLP" in the name of their project. They were clearly making it an online game, which might conflict with Hasbro's future plans, or even arguably the iOS/Android game.
Unless Hasbro and Capcom suddenly partner up and make an official pony/attorney crossover, they have no real reason to go after us. (And if that happens, we probably wouldn't be able to compete with the real deal anyway, so win-win!)

General MLI Discussion / Re: Stock visual novel features
« on: December 14, 2012, 07:19:57 AM »
Hmm... I can't speak for the entire staff (and our glorious leader Gabu would have to sign off on new features), but my thoughts:
Automatic text advancement - For bits that have already been seen, yes, this does make sense. I'm definitely hoping for this to be implemented, although it will require a slight rethinking of the current saving paradigm (we have to store every completed conversation so the game remembers what you've seen).
Entire conversation skip - For cutscenes this could work (and yes, skipping that extremely lengthy intro section has been on our list for some time), but the trick outside of cutscenes is dealing with what was between the skip points. Where should the skip start and end? Will the engine be able to compensate and provide all evidence and conversation options you would have gotten in the skipped segment? I'd say that automatic text advancement is a good enough substitution for this, because then the game can run through every part of the conversation in order without having to figure anything new out, plus it could theoretically be stopped mid-conversation if the player is looking for something specific.
Per-character voice toggle - Hm, that's a good point, even the best fan VAs can be very subjective... it might require a slightly different method of connecting dialog to characters in the code than what we're currently using, but not impossible. What does everypony else think of this one?
Thanks for the suggestions either way, these do indeed seem like they may make good additions.
